The Freedom to Mess Up/Freak Out
August 7, 2008
Elsewhere on the internet, a friend wrote about the freedom to fuck mess up - and I would add, to freak out.
I think significant relationships bring out the other that is an aspect of one’s self. Who would guess one can feel so insecure? Who would guess one can be such a psycho? Who would guess one can become so vulnerable?
The presence of this other forces the need to feel free to mess up/freak out - kind of a sin boldly mentality. I am not saying ‘do whatever you want cuz you can rely on the grace of others’ - what I am suggesting is that WHEN one messes up/freaks out - one can rely on the grace of the other. I think relationships, in order to last, must be characterized by a certain elasticity, a certain capacity to embrace mess ups/ freak outs - should they, by chance, occur.
