Pride, Barebacking, Faith = The Podcast, the 7th

Date July 2, 2008

In this episode, we talk about our 39th Annual Pride Parade experience, David Halperin’s What Do Gay Men Want? - An Essay on Sex, Risk, and Subjectivity (Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press, 2007) - and the issue of disclosing one’s HIV/AIDS status - barebacking, and returning to ‘Church’ or faith after experiencing Church or faith as homophobic.

Unfortunately, the sound continues to suck need improvement - a fan is blowing in the mic - and then some siren sounds make it into the podcast; we are making a concerted effort to improve the sound, and our attempts continue to be subverted. Anyway, thanks for your patience and for continuing to listen. We’re glad you’re thinking with us.

  1. Matt Says:

    1. I cannot think of the song “Proud” without thinking of “The Biggest Loser.”
    2. Politics are always nasty. There will never be a time when it is not.
    3. Be careful with the editing. The segue within the “Bride of Christ” with the police was rough.
    4. I find it highly amusing that y’all are having a discussion about acting “ignorant” when intoxicated. Highly amusing.
    5. This music sucks.
    6. I think the more important question is “What Do Women Want?”
    7. Most of America cannot necessarily follow your choice of vocabulary. Audience first. Especially when it’s 1 A.M.
    8. I would debate the idea that there is an “HIV Panic.” I believe there may have been one, but I believe that people have dismissed this from their daily thoughts and practices.
    9. Does everything have to be so clinical?
    10. I think that unprotected sex might only be defined as “normal” within the context of a monogamous, committed relationship. I do not think that unprotected sex would be deemed “normal” when it comes to casual or spontaneous sexual encounters.
    11. I don’t think people necessarily demonize individuals who choose to engage in bareback sex, but I think are more astonished at their lack of interest in their own life.
    12. Yes. I’m sure the “command of God” would love people to disclose. But, you are also speaking of a population of people that do not necessarily believe or trust in a God, but more specifically a church, that does not condone their behavior. If there is no God, what reasoning, besides their conscience, would they have to disclose?
    13. I think it’s very true that many individuals believe they will get it. I think it also reflects a guiltiness from their behaviors, or what they feel to be poor decisions.

    And that is all.
